New York has the highest concentration of artist residencies in the country — partly because the major foundation money is here, partly because the upstate-Manhattan axis lets programs run as both rural retreats (Yaddo, Millay, Omi) and urban studio programs (Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, Wave Hill, NARS, Residency Unlimited). This page collects every active New York program in the RMAR directory.

Yaddo (Saratoga Springs) and Millay Arts (Austerlitz) are the most prestigious upstate programs, both with multi-decade track records and small, competitive cohorts. For urban studio residencies, Lower Manhattan Cultural Council's Workspace and NARS Foundation in Brooklyn are the most cited.
Yes — Yaddo, Millay, Wave Hill's Winter Workspace, and several Lower Manhattan Cultural Council programs are fully funded. Most urban NYC residencies require participants to cover their own housing; upstate retreat programs typically include it.
Yaddo accepts roughly 10% of applicants. Millay Arts is in a similar range. Brooklyn-based programs vary more — NARS and Residency Unlimited fall between 5% and 20% depending on cycle.
